-80C Freezer Inventory & Cryo Box Locator

Searchable -80 °C sample inventory: box, row and column positions, type, concentration and volume, with CSV export.

How it works

Each sample is recorded with its box and a row-and-column position (rows A–H, columns 1–12), plus type, concentration, volume and notes. The inventory is searchable, so a sample can be located before the freezer is opened and its neighbours warmed. Name boxes to include freezer, rack and shelf if you need that hierarchy.

Frequently asked questions

How should I organise a −80 °C freezer?

Use a consistent hierarchy — freezer, rack, shelf, box, position — and record every sample against a grid coordinate so it can be found without searching. Label boxes on the front face where they are visible when partly withdrawn, keep an inventory outside the freezer, and group by project rather than by date so related samples are retrieved together, which minimises door-open time.

How long can samples stay out of a −80 °C freezer?

Minimise it: keep the door open under a minute and work on dry ice for anything being sorted. Repeated partial thawing degrades nucleic acids and proteins and is a common hidden cause of irreproducible results. Freezer contents warm measurably within seconds of opening, so retrieving a known coordinate rather than searching is a real preservation measure, not just convenience.
